Sehith

fourth of the four throneless goddesses of the Sixth Division

Identified

Group: the figures of the Sixth Division of the Am-Tuat, called Metchet-mu-nebt-Tuat [budge-1905]. Budge walks the register in order:

1. Hem, crocodile-headed, seated but without a throne · 2. Em-nu-ur, ape-headed · 3. Ani · 4. Hem · 5. Netch-atef · 6. Ankh-hra · 7. Met-hra · 8. Netchti · 9–12. Four goddesses, each in a seated position but without a throne: Antheth, Henhenith, Hemt, and Sehith.

"Seated, but without a throne" is stated twice in the same passage and is clearly meant. Elsewhere in the Am-Tuat gods sit on thrones, on serpents, on looms, on the stiffened tail of a snake. This register's twelve sit on nothing at all, and Budge records the absence as a feature rather than skipping it.

Under the companies rule (C246) this is a pointer rather than an entry. Found by locating the name and reading the register (C393).

Open questions

  • Read the text that follows the roster. Budge prints "The text which refers to these reads:" and then a block the OCR renders as hieroglyph rubble. In these divisions that text is always the part that says what the figures are for — see the Ninth, where it turns twelve seated figures into the wrappings of Osiris.
  • Why no thrones? Stated twice for this register and not explained. Check whether throneless seating recurs elsewhere in the twelve divisions — the corpus already tracks the reversed-head posture across divisions (C299, C318) and this is the same kind of question.
  • Antheth, Henhenith, Hemt — her three companions — are not in the census (C397).
  • Two gods named Hem appear in the same register, at positions 1 and 4. Scribal duplication, or two beings? Budge does not remark on it.
