Overview

This entry is ○ name-only: the name is attested, and almost nothing else is. That is a real finding rather than an absence of work — it records that the name was searched across every archived source and says exactly what came back.

What the archive holds

Hemen appears in Budge's catalogue of gods and mythological beings named in the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead, between Hept-seshet and Hem-nu [budge-1904]. His index gives i. 81 and ii. 336 [budge-1904].

That is all the archive holds.

A near-miss worth recording. The triage returned three hits. One of them is not this god at all: in an interlinear magical text the sequence "an hemen hau heh en" occurs [budge-1904], which is Egyptian being transliterated word by word, not a divine name. Reading the context caught it; a hit count would not have.

So: one genuine list appearance, one index entry, one false positive. ○ name-only is the correct grade and there is nothing here to inflate it with.

Open questions

  • Read the two indexed passages (i. 81, ii. 336). The first is inside the Pyramid Texts god-list region and may add an Old Kingdom locus.
  • Establish whether Hemen is the falcon god of Hefat / Mo'alla, which is the standard identification and appears nowhere in the archived sources. If so, there is Old Kingdom tomb material, and this entry is badly under-graded.
  • Determine the reading and whether Hemen is related to Hem-nu, listed immediately after it by Budge.
  • Searched 2026-07-29 across all 8 archived sources with generated spelling variants; the loci above are everything that returned.
