A name and a job. Nothing else survives — and that is the finding, not a gap in our work. Arrives with the Book of the Dead.
Aati
the seventeenth assessor
Overview
Aati is one of the forty-two assessors who hear the Negative Confession in the hall of the Two Truths. He comes forth from Heliopolis, and the sin denied before him is speaking against another person.
That is the entire attested record. He is named once, in a spell, with a home town and a sin — and there is no myth, no cult, no image, and no other text. This entry is short because the evidence is short, and it will stay short unless a further attestation is found.
What the texts say
In Budge's translation of the Papyrus of Nebseni, the seventeenth declaration runs:
"Hail, Aati, who comest forth from Annu (Heliopolis), I have not set my mouth in motion [against any man]." [budge-1901]
The bracketed words are the translator's supplement. The formula is fixed across the list: a hail, an address, a place of origin, and one specific sin denied — see the Assessors of Maat for the structure and the full roster.
The record
Every claim above traces to a row here. Source, exact place in that source, and what it actually supports.
| Source | Locus | Attests |
|---|---|---|
[budge-1901] | BD 125, declaration 17 (Papyrus of Nebseni, BM 9,900, sheet 30) | the name, the home town, and the sin judged |

Open questions
- Compare the assessor lists in other witnesses (Papyrus of Ani, Papyrus of Nu, the Turin recension) — assessor names and their order vary between copies, and a variant reading may exist for this figure.
- Determine whether "Aati" here is a distinct being or an epithet shared with another deity of Heliopolis. Until resolved, do not merge.
